Mind, Body, Sitti. (Summer 2016) A series in-progress.
Founded in 2014, Sitti Soap Company provides continuous employment opportunities for women in the Jerash "Gaza" Refugee Camp, a Palestinian refugee camp in Jordan.
What was once considered the tradition of their sitti (grandmother) has been revived as a sustaining livelihood.
Each of the women employed by the social enterprise refer to a different part of the soap-making process that they enjoy the most; sometimes it is the careful balancing of ingredients between the olive oil, water and lye, while other times it is the shaping and finishing of each bar until it is smooth and ready to be packaged. All together, the process is a meditative and ritualistic experience for whomever takes part.
